MTA and New York State Commitments
MTA’s 2040 Clean Fleet Commitment – As part of its overhaul of bus service, the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority has committed to a transition to a fully clean-emissions bus fleet by 2040. Boasting the largest bus fleet in the country, the MTA buys roughly ten percent of all buses sold in North America every year. The MTA’s commitment isn’t just a win for New York City; it will help shift the entire nationwide market, encouraging other fleets to seriously consider electric buses.
Electrify NY applauds the MTA’s commitment and will work with the MTA to ensure that they adhere to their timeline to end the authority’s reliance on fossil fuel-emitting buses by 2040 and that they prioritize communities that have borne the brunt of pollution as they transition to a clean fleet.
Fast Forward & The 2020-2024 Capital Plan: On September 16th, 2019 the MTA released a historic Capital Plan. For the first time in the MTA’s history, the five-year plan includes major investments in transit electrification, including the purchase of 0f 500 electric buses and funding to begin converting up to eight bus depots for electric buses.
Zero-emission transit fleets – New York State has required cars and light-duty trucks sold in the state to meet the California low emission vehicle emissions standards (CA LEV) for more than 20 years.
Electrify NY Priorities:
Transparency: Electrify NY advocates for more transparent processes within the MTA, including for procurement, construction, and siting of transportation needs.
Environmental Justice: As the MTA continues to roll out electric buses, it is important that they commit to an equitable program to improve air quality in low-income communities and communities of color that have historically had harmful emissions and poor health due to their proximity to vehicles.
